Meta’s WhatsApp Business MCP vs a Team Inbox MCP: Which Do You Need?

Short answer: they solve different problems. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Tools MCP helps a developer or admin set up and debug a WhatsApp Cloud API account from inside an AI assistant. A team-inbox MCP, like the one in MajlisDesk, lets the assistant read and work the conversations your team is already having. Here is what each does, based on Meta’s own documentation and ours.

What Meta’s WhatsApp Business Tools MCP does

Meta announced it in September 2026, and its documentation describes it as a server that lets your AI agent and IDE assistant “manage and debug your WhatsApp Business integration from one place”. It is in beta. Its tools cover:

  • Discovery: listing your businesses, WhatsApp accounts and phone numbers.
  • Number onboarding: adding a number, sending and checking the verification code, registering it.
  • Message templates: listing, creating, updating and deleting them.
  • Messaging: sending a free-form text or an approved template, after confirming the target with you. Free-form text only arrives inside WhatsApp’s 24-hour customer service window.
  • Webhooks and account setup: callbacks, subscriptions, payments, business verification checks.

To use it you need admin access to the business and to a WhatsApp-enabled Meta app, and the Cloud API terms accepted. It works with Claude, ChatGPT and OpenAI Codex, among others.

What it does not do

It has no tools for reading your team’s conversations. It will not tell you which customers are waiting, what someone asked last week or what was said in a voice note. It configures the account; it does not work the inbox. And it is built around the Cloud API, so it applies to numbers registered there, not to a number your team runs on the WhatsApp Business app.

What a team-inbox MCP does

MajlisDesk connects the number your team already uses, by QR code, and puts WhatsApp and email in one shared inbox. Its MCP server gives Claude or ChatGPT 22 tools over that inbox: read a chat, search messages and voice-note transcripts, list waiting tickets, open an email thread, look at photos, check which numbers are connected. You can ask “which customers have been waiting more than a day?” and get an answer from your real chats.

Replies are off unless the person approving the connection allows them, and then the assistant can only answer one chat at a time where the customer wrote first. It cannot start conversations or broadcast.

Which one you need

  • You are setting up WhatsApp on the Cloud API (registering numbers, building templates, wiring webhooks) → Meta’s WhatsApp Business Tools MCP.
  • Your team answers customers on WhatsApp and you want an assistant that can read, summarise and follow up on those conversations → a team-inbox MCP such as MajlisDesk.
  • Both: they do not overlap, so a business on the Cloud API could reasonably run one for setup and use a shared inbox for the day-to-day.

Setting one up takes about two minutes: connect WhatsApp to Claude or connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT.
